Lake Starr, Doctoral Intern

Lake (they/them) earned bachelors’ degrees in both psychology and English literature from Western Washington University and is currently a doctoral student in clinical psychology at Antioch University of New England. Lake’s prior training was in early childhood education where they studied the use of storytelling to regulate and understand emotions. Today, their clinical work and research centers on how these stories can help us cope with life’s challenges and develop a sense of self.

Lake uses an integrated approach to therapy that draws from psychodynamic theory and multicultural principles. They believe that collaboration with clients is essential, and that it provides grounding while addressing difficult or vulnerable subject matter.  To assist in this process, Lake may also draw from their knowledge of evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), attachment-based therapy, and trauma-informed interventions.

Lake’s practice is founded on their belief that each person has an innate drive towards health, and they offer a non-judgmental space where clients can learn to access the healthiest parts of themselves.  When working with both adults and children, Lake believes in holding the individual’s inner world with compassion and respect. What they find most exciting about therapy is how new stories inevitably take shape in the treatment, and the positive change that emerges in that process. Lake is available for both in-person and virtual appointments with children, adolescents and adults.
