Luc Olivier Charlap, PhD
Luc earned his PhD in clinical social work from New York University, and completed his postdoctoral studies in psychoanalysis at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy. He has a private practice in New York City and Northampton.
Serving on the faculty at various psychoanalytic institutes for much of his career, Luc teaches classes on Trauma and its Treatment; Gender and Sexuality; Object Relations; Klein; Envy, Narcissism and Borderline States; and Character Styles and Treatment. Presently, as a faculty member and training analyst at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP), he teaches a course on Narcissism and Borderline States in their four-year psychoanalytic program. He is also on the faculty at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP), where he enjoys teaching Object Relations, advising candidates, and serving on various committees. In his “free” time, he supervises psychotherapy and psychoanalytic candidates.
Luc's ongoing professional goal is to understand the clinical implications of severe gender trauma and the resulting body/mind misrecognition (i.e. What role does dissociation play, and how does it contribute to dysphoria in trans individuals and non-binary individuals?). He has published multiple articles on this and related topics, and has delivered numerous presentations at psychoanalytic institutes and conferences. Luc provides individual and group supervision at Psychotherapy for Insight and Change.
